The Office of the United States Trustee is responsible for overseeing Bankruptcy Trustees and maintaining the integrity of the Bankruptcy system. They are the people who bring in the F.B.I. to investigate Bankruptcy crimes like perjury by debtors (that is lying on bankruptcy documents or at the hearing), debtors hiding assets, not listing all debts, misrepresenting income, or expenses, and trustee theft of assets from a bankruptcy estates. They then bring in the United States Attorney to prosecute debtors or trustees who violate federal law. They also file motions to deny debtors a Chapter 7 discharge where they believe the debtor has the ability to pay any significant portion of the debt they owe to their general unsecured creditors.
